The restaurants serving the best food porn in Newcastle

… According to Jeff, blogger at Newcastle Eats.

Jeff: When you think of eating in Newcastle, it might be Gregg’s the Bakers that initially springs to mind, or a dirty kebab after a night out on the Big Market. But you’d be wrong. Newcastle’s restaurants have come on massively in terms of quality over the past decade, with more than our fair share of excellent dining options, from food markets to Michelin-starred dining.

That’s not to say there isn’t some food which really feeds your primeval desires. Here’s some of my favourites which aren’t just #FoodPorn but are some of the best foods in the region, and indeed the country has to offer:

Sharing feasts at Trakol

Trakol opened last year as part of the larger By the River Brewery Co. project, and its open flame kitchen has won it some high-profile fans for its gutsy, but serious cooking.

The nose-to-tail menu reads well from top to bottom, however it’s the ‘sharing feasts’ that should catch your eye – huge hunks of aged meat cooked over an open fire, like the 1kg T-Bone, or whole fish like the turbot for 2, simply grilled and accompanied with some hearty sides.

My favourite has got to be the half pig’s head for two – served with a 1kg pork chop on the side, plus black pudding, grilled apples, and token salad. It’s a hefty feed, with which you’re given a pair of tongs, and instructed to just ‘go at it’. It’s visceral cooking, but it tastes so, so good.

Plateau Fruits de Mer at Saltwater Fish Company

The North-East boasts some of the best coastlines in the world, meaning we have access to the wonderful larder that is the North Sea. What better way to put that to use than piling it up high on ice, and devouring with a glass or two of champagne. Who said #FoodPorn doesn’t have to be civilised?

The Fruits de Mer at Saltwater Fish Company consists of, ready… sweet langoustines, local oysters, crab legs and claws, clams, cockles, winkles, and piles of mussels, as well as fresh fries and salad. And if you’re feeling decadent – and why wouldn’t you be – top it off with a lobster. For fans of seafood, it’s a must-eat in Newcastle.

The best pizza in the country at Cal’s Own

Cal’s Own is one of only two restaurants in the UK which have achieved AVPN status, meaning they meet the very specific requirements in terms of ingredients, methods used, and quality that the Italian inspection body demands. What that means, is epic pizza.

Whether you’re keeping it traditional with the Margherita, or going off-piste with some additions like n’duja, olives, or sottoncenere tarfuto, the pizzas blow you away, every time. The tomatoes, the cheese, the love that goes into the dough all comes through into what is simply the best pizza you might eat North of Naples.

Not just an award-winning pizza restaurant, Cal’s Own also serves a gorgeous selection of small plates, from oozing slow-cooked beef shin in tomato sauce with tonnes of cheese to one of the best scotch eggs you’ll find anywhere, to sweet and salty bacon-wrapped dates. If you’re coming to Newcastle and not stopping by for a pie, you’re missing out.

Sunday Sapaad at Dosa Kitchen

South Indian food won’t always feature in best #FoodPorn lists, however the scran on offer at Dosa Kitchen is some of the best you’ll find in the city.

Typically, South Indian small plates, on a Sunday Dosa Kitchen switches to its sapaad menu – essentially an all you can eat dabba of that day’s curries, chutneys, dips, and veggies, with as many wafer-thin dosas as you can handle.

Buffets (often rightfully so) get a bad reputation, but this is quality cooking, absolutely superb spicing, and some of the best Indian food in the city.

Bacon Butter Burger at Meat:Stack

No #FoodPorn list would be complete without a good ol’ burger, and purveyors of Newcastle’s best burger porn is Meat:Stack. A street food venture which is taking over the world with their smashed patties, they keep it simple, but always mega tasty.

They’re often not much to look at, but the proof is in the eating. These burgers are smashed on a grill top, forming gnarly little nuggets of crispy beef on the crust, while remaining super-juicy inside. They’re topped with, well, anything you’d like – try the Bacon Butter Burger which boasts double-smoked bacon, garlic & bacon butter, braised onions, and more sauce than you can handle.

Thought you were done with one of the best burgers in Newcastle? You’ve gotta have the fries too, which are cooked in beef dripping for the ultimate flavour. These things are like crack, and some of the best chips you’ll ever taste.
