Stephensons – 150 years of supplying catering equipment

The independent, family run catering equipment supplier specialises in restaurant and bar equipment including light kitchen catering, janitorial, paper and disposable products.

Starting with humble beginnings in the Salford Flat Iron Market in 1860, Henry George Stephenson began selling pottery made by Wood and Sons. A few years later in 1868, he moved the company to the newly built Barton Arcade and eventually registered the company in 1900.

Michael Stephenson, the current Managing Director, joined the company in 1963 and the company has since gone from strength to strength. A few years later in 1968, they moved premises from Barton Arcade to Kennerley Works, which proved to be the perfect location to expand the trade with national brewery contacts. These included Boddingtons, Greenalls, Yate’s Wine Lodges and Scottish & Newcastle amongst others.

Regional brewers came later and relationships formed with J.W Lees and Frederic Robinson & Daniel Thwaites.

With breweries being such a large part of Stephensons’ growth over the years, creating a celebratory piece for their anniversary had to be a reflection of this successful historical relationship.

To celebrate an incredible 150 years of supplying catering equipment spanning five generations of the family, Stephensons created the Lantern Tankard.

The Lantern Tankard

The Lantern Tankard is a ten-sided tankard that revolutionised beer drinking in the 1920’s. The change from ceramic beer cups to clear glass meant that the quality of the beer was now exposed. This resulted in brewers needing to improve the quality of their cloudy beer.

A nod to the company’s history, this modern adaptation of the tankard is a reproduction of the version produced by The Crystal Glass Company Of Knottingley in West Yorkshire and is now available to purchase from Stephensons.

Food Porn Awards

Stephensons are proud sponsors of the Food Porn Awards. With a history of supplying venues with equipment to present their dishes in the best way, it’s a natural step to have their expertise on the judging panel.
